Oh, joy!

So far there's been a pattern regarding his teeth & molars coming in;
Teeth:
1st and 2nd tooth came in 2 weeks apart, 6 weeks later
3rd and 4th tooth came in 2 weeks apart, 6 weeks later
5th and 6th tooth came in 1 week apart, 6 weeks later
7th and 8th tooth came in 1 week apart.

2 months and 2 weeks of rest before ...
Molars:
1st and 2nd molars came in 1 week apart, 9 weeks later
3rd and 4th molars came in 1 week apart.

Now it seems like there should be a time of respite for at least a month or so, as far as teeth/molars coming in goes, but something tells me (teething symptoms) that early next month he's going to be getting a set of new teeth or molars. Oh, joy!!! ... ehe ... not really.

While it is in a way joyous at the same time I feel sorry for the little muffin as it's been one molar after another with not much time for recuperation in between. Further more, the fourth molar isn't fully out, nor has a month gone by, and already new teeth are on the fore. :(

But all in all he's taking the whole teething bout so well, he's such a trooper! And I guess by now he's a bit more accustomed to the discomforts, pains, etc., that come with it. I on the other hand don't think I'll ever get used to his biting/gnawing sessions. :D

Alright, I know it seems like all I've been posting about lately are his molars/teeth :D. Just bare with me. I promise to make up for it with lots of photos and more about what he is learning/doing, etc., next month.

It's just that it's a bit hard to get photos when you don't own a camera, heh, :) and have to depend on whether or not someone else's camera is available or not. I'm praying, hoping, to get one this year if anyone wants to be an (angel) :D and help towards it I won't deny your help ;).

My little one is sick

It looks like Kenji caught a cough last night. This will be Kenji's first cough at 16 1/2 months old. It was to be expected, though, as with his teething bout his defenses are low and the weather right now is not so favorable. What to do?

It was pretty sad to hear him cough last night. I could tell that his throat was obviously hurting him a lot as his voice was hoarse and he would cry every time he coughed. Poor little pooch :(, and poor little me :D I got about an hour of sleep last night. PTL.

When praying about what to do concerning his cough the Lord showed me to take him to a pediatrician. A sweet friend of ours referred us to a good pediatrician. We went in for the check up expecting to pay, since we weren't able to contact him via phone and provision it, but the Lord had gone before us and prepared the pediatricians heart and he ended up checking Kenji for free. TYJ!

While he does have a cough with a lot of mucous thank the Lord it's not too serious and because it's only in the very beginning stages, Lord willing, it should clear up in 5 - 7 days with some cough drops the doctor prescribed.

Despite all that thank the Lord that overall Kenji is healthy, he gained 250 gr. these last 2 months putting him at 9 kg., and his 4th molar (left bottom) is here! Hooray! (The doctor noticed it while running the usual general check up). I guess that's why he had such a terrible night last night; caught a cough and his molar was cutting through :( :(

Please do pray that his cough will clear up ASAP. Also I'd like to pray that he can gain weight as he is still about 2 kg. under weight. It's to be expected that he would lose some weight, or be a bit under weight, due to his appetite dropping considerably these last couple of months that his molars have been coming in one after another. Thanks for your prayers, I really appreciate them.

All over again

Just when he was starting to do better sleeping-wise and eating-wise, well health-wise in general, he once again hits a teething phase. Yep he just got his 3rd molar (right bottom)! Yay! Or not so yay ...

I'm not complaining here, by the way, I'm happy that he's getting another molar as it will mean he'll be able to eat more things, but till that grand moment --when the molar is fully out-- there is a slew of unpleasant things to endure. :D

During his teething phase; he's more susceptible to sickness, he's cranky/fussy, everything he finds goes in his mouth, he's extra clingy to me, he randomly bites me, his appetite drops, his attention span is shorter, he's very restless throughout the night, and much more.

It truly is more tiresome to keep him happy throughout the day as he demands all my attention and as if that weren't enough he only permits a couple hours of sleep at night. When am I suppose to fit in all the other things I must do? Oh, bother!

But even then every morning I find myself loving him to pieces as he jumps on me and pokes my eyes to make sure I'm awake with him. Then he'll smother me with kisses and insist we both play with toys, or look at books, or hit the button, like gazillion times, on his little donkey stuffy that plays a vowel song.

How could I get upset at such a sweet and tender little one like him (sweet and tender only in the early hours of the morning, mind you) smiling at me with toy, or book, or stuffy in hand waiting for me to join him? I cannot.

Oh, I pray for this round of molars coming in ("round of molars" because the 4th molar is sure to follow in a week or so) to be short so that he can return to his happier, independent, and healthier little self and so I can fit in an hour or two more of sleep at night.

Dia de Reyes

Finally the day to open up the presents has arrived! And the kids are just dying to do so, especially Kenji. I had to put the presents under the tree last night otherwise Kenji would have opened all of them before time.

I'm trying to remember the details that go along with "Dia de Reyes". Here's what I recall from my childhood:

The tradition was to place your bed slippers by the door to the house the night of the 5th along with a little piece of paper describing what you wanted and if I'm not mistaken stating which of the Three Kings you wanted to deliver your present.

You were also supposed to put by the door a little snack for the Three Kings' beasts. I think it was a bowl with some sugar water for the camel, another one with plain sugar for the horse, and I can't remember what the third bowl had for the elephant. And possibly something for the Three Kings as well, I'm not sure.

Anyways, then on the morning of the 6th you would open the presents and there is a traditional bread "Rosca de Reyes" that you would snack on, accompanied by some hot cocoa, upon waking up and opening the presents.

Traditionally "Rosca de Reyes" used to be a very yummy and wholsome pastry. The real kind contained all sorts of dried fruit and nuts and was very tasty. But now a days this "traditional" bread has become very commercial and is nothing but a dry, flavorless, yet very sweet, air-filled bread.

One last detail about the "Rosca de Reyes", and which has still been carried on through the years, is the secret placing of several little plastic dolls in the "Rosca". I don't know if these dolls have any significance or not.

Anyhow, if you happened to get/find one of the various dolls in your piece of bread then you/your family would have to be the ones responsible to throw the next party.

Kenji taking a bite of the "Rosca de Reyes".

Now it's Angel's turn.

The presents finally ... HOORAY!

Our two Virgo posers ... but for some reason they're not looking at the camera. They must be thoroughly entertained by Liz and her monkey business :D

And here are the long awaited presents ...

A semi-truck that transports cars, from mommy.

A beautiful and colorful alphabet puzzle set, from Liz.

For those who didn't check out the blog during November here's a little background to this next present.

While looking at his "My big Trucks" book his eyes fell on a big fire engine and he immediately folded his hands, all by himself, and prayed for the Lord to supply him one. So I had to answer his full of faith prayer.

A fire engine from mommy.

Let's see what this fire engine can do...

A perfect Kenji size black board, from grandma.

Puppy bed slippers, from mommy. He's trying to put them on, so cute!

A basket ball, from Liz.

All he's missing now is a hoop his size to make some slam dunks.

6 Hot Wheel cars, from mommy.

A Tigger and friends set, from granddad.

A small "press & go " straight track, from mommy.

And here he is enjoying it immensely.

1st big accident

It had only been the first day that we, us here in Torreon, Liz, Ez, Jo, and Angie were all together ready to enjoy a couple of days off with each other when the saddest thing happened to the little muffin man.

After dinner Ez had put on some music and we were all just sitting down relaxing and thoroughly enjoying his little impromptu "show" mimicked by Angel, of course. When all of a sudden Kenji comes walking towards me in the state between crying and at loss of breath due to so much crying.

First I thought that maybe Angel had taken his toy away from him, as that happens often. But then I remembered that Angel was on the other side of the room having a great time with Ez. With that option out of the way I assume he fell or bonked himself during his play somewhere.

Since I didn't really know what had happened to him, I sat him on my lap and sought to comfort him. He stopped crying but still seemed to sob a bit about something. I asked him if he got hurt and he said yes, so I pursued to ask him where and he looked down at his little hand.

I took his hand in mine so I could check it and pray for it, but as I did he broke out crying again. At this point I was quite sure that something more had happened to him as he never cries likes that over a little fall or bonk, etc. I asked Angie if she had seen what happened as she was sitting on the side of the room where Kenji had walked from, but she hadn't.

By now his cry had a pitch of certain pain and I'll admit I was starting to get frantic and worried as obviously something was quite wrong with him, but I couldn't figure out what it was. He kept complaining about his hand/arm, or so I thought, so I started to take off his layers of clothes so I could get a closer look, but as I did he just seemed to yell out in more pain.

I only managed to take off his 2 sweaters as it was obvious by now that when I would touch/move his arm it would hurt him. Once his sweaters were off I was able to see the reason for his crying. His left arm seemed rather limp and I immediately slipped my hand in his shirt in an attempt to 'double check' or confirm the thought I had in my head.

I don't know if that was the smartest thing to do but in any case I had done it and when my fingers came in contact with a gap between his shoulder socket and his arm I felt nauseated. I was worried sick by now as I didn't know exactly what had happened to him or how it had happened and most importantly how serious his injury was.

I was also worried that perhaps he had fractured something or that I had made matters worse with all the movement I caused when trying to take his sweaters off and check his arm. During the whole time the above transpired Kenji was crying uncontrollably, perhaps the reason why it made me all the more uneasy and harder to keep it together.

I told mom I wanted to take him to the hospital and have it checked. I carried him in my arms ever so carefully as the slightest move would cause him great pain and we, mom, Angie, Jim and I with Kenji, at around 9:30 headed out towards the nearest hospital.

During our way to the hospital I kept praying for him, as I'm sure everyone else was, that it wouldn't be anything serious, no fractured bones or the like and that the healing process would be quick and with as little pain as possible. I was also whispering verses and key promises of prayer and healing in Kenji's ear and it seemed to calm him down to the point that during the last 5 minutes of our ride he dosed off.

We arrived at the hospital and made our way to the emergency wing. A sweet young doctor took a look at Kenji's arm and confirmed what we up to this point knew, that his arm had popped out of joint.

Now he didn't seem to think that Kenji had fractured anything, but just to make sure he asked for a couple of X-rays to be taken, as well as to be able to know to what side, etc., he needed to place the arm back in.

Once we took the X-rays the doctor took a look at them and said that indeed there were no broken/fractured bones and proceeded to pop his arm back in place with the help of another doctor to hold Kenji's face/neck still.

It was so hard for me to see him in so much agony crying out "mama, mama" and not be able to go to him and help him or make his "ouchy" go away. But I think all considering I did pretty well.

Once the doctors finished popping his arm back in place I carried Kenji, but I still noticed him cry when I'd touch his arm. I asked the doctor if he was certain that there was nothing else wrong with his arm as he still seemed in a lot of pain.

He assured me that there wasn't and said that his cry was due to his arm being sore from what had happened to him. He began to bandage his arm up and said he would have to keep the bandage on/immobilize his arm for 2 weeks in order to let it heal properly.

While the doctor did this Kenji began to cry and cry, just as he had before his arm was popped back in place and it was this continued crying as if something was still hurting him that made me uneasy. I asked the doctor if there was a children's bone doctor (traumatologo) on duty that I could see, but there wasn't, of course.

There was nothing more we could do about it then, so we headed back home and I braced myself for a long 2 weeks of caring and carrying Kenji, literally 24-7, as I knew that it would be difficult for him to walk and keep his balance with one arm only and I couldn't afford to have him fall on his little arm while it was recovering.

I didn't sleep much that night as Kenji was very restless and I was worried that he would roll over to his left side and hurt himself, to which he did twice and each time he did he cried quite a bit as if he had gotten hurt.

The next morning I told mom I didn't think everything was okay with Kenji's arm, as last night's doctor had said, and told her about how every time something would touch or rub up on his left arm he would cry as if something was hurting him.

God bless mom, she looked up some specialists and found a very sweet tramatologa who agreed to check Kenji up for free that very afternoon. TYJ! At her place she asked about what had happened, how it had happened, etc.

(By now I found out just what had happened last night to Kenji. Apparently someone got him by his hands/wrists and raised him up. While doing so I guess they lost a bit of their grip on him due to the various layers he had on and they tried to yank him up again, as I suppose they felt he was going to fall or something, and as such Kenji ended up as he did.) :(

She then took off Kenji's shirt and bandage and upon doing so his forearm naturally fell from his tummy to his side and when it did he began crying in pain, again. She noticed this. I began explaining what the doctor had done/said and how I though that something was still hurting him due to his crying.

She got up and took a closer look at the X-ray and came back and asked me to distract Kenji for a bit, while I did she took his left hand in one had and his elbow in another and "whala." Kenji cried a bit during the process, but once she was done he stopped his crying.

It was then that she told us that the reason he had still been in pain throughout the night was because his elbow had popped out of place as well, (good Lord) but now that she had put it back in place he shouldn't feel any pain.

The specialist told us that most doctors, unless they're specialist, always think that when an infant has an accident like Kenji's that it's the shoulder that pops out, but she said that usually it's the elbow. But because kids' bones are so little it's very hard to see this through and X-ray.

Kenji wasn't crying anymore but he still wouldn't move his fingers or hand, something I also noticed he wasn't doing the night I took him to the doctor.
She brought him a little hand puppet tiger and asked me to try to get him to move his fingers.

I attempted to get him to touch the tigers nose but nothing came of it at first. She told me to hold the puppet right in front of his hand, I was holding it way up by his face, duh. And he ever so slowly moved his little index finger.

I was so happy at that moment (I think I cried) and I encouraged him to go ahead and touch the tigers nose. Again his index finger and the rest of his fingers moved and he tapped the tigers nose, which was less than an inch away from his hand but still meant great progress overall.

This time the specialist told me to place the tiger at his shoulders' length and see if he would touch his nose. I did as she instructed, this time obviously it meant he would have to move not only his finger/s but his arm and wrist as well, and I wasn't sure if he would do it, but he did!

It took a while for him to get his arm up to his shoulders' length and it took even more effort on his part to coordinate his finger to touch the tigers nose as at first his finger as if by some magnetic force would go the the sides of the tigers nose rather than his nose. But he finally did it!

I was so happy that his arm and hand were back to normal that I couldn't stop smothering his arm and hand with kisses as tears of thankfulness rolled down my eyes.

Once I got my act back together she told me that as a professional kids bone specialist she thought it best to let Kenji go ahead and use his little arm at his own pace, rather than immobilize it for 2 weeks. Yay! Another answer to prayer!

Anyways, that's the story of his first accident at the age of 16 months and the testimony of how the Lord completely healed him in less than 24 hours within getting hurt. Thanks to all who prayed for him.

Here he is the very same afternoon his elbow was fixed. You'd think he'd take things a little slower or at least be a good boy, but no, he's back to his own happy little self; mischievous, of course.

His Aunt Liz covered him in kisses and instead of putting on his "angel" face for the camera, he puts on his "rascal" one. Tsk, Tsk.

Trying out Angie's sunglasses ...

Yeah, don't think those flatter you, my love. :)
